Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
SDG5 focuses on issues related to gender equality, including ensuring women’s full participation and equal opportunities in leadership at every level, adopting policies that promote gender equality and empowerment, ensuring access to education for both men and women, and much more. At Lynn University, this takes a variety of forms, from efforts to track admissions and graduation rates for female students and providing mentoring programs for women to anti-discrimination policies and support and more.
This report is organized into three sections:
Institutional Initiatives: Refers to ongoing initiatives at the institution that are currently active, occur every year, and relate to SDG 5. Wherever possible, statistics are provided to show the impact of this work.
Events/News: Refers to single events or news that occurred during the reporting year of AY22-23 relating to SDG 5. These are not recurring, and as such are not part of the long-term initiatives.
Courses: Refers to all the courses in the university’s academic catalog for the reporting year AY22-23 that deal with issues related to SDG 5.
Goal 5

Institutional Initiatives
Anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies
Lynn University has instituted policies to ensure equal access to education regardless of sex by instituting anti-discrimination admissions policies, as well as ensuring protection against harassment and other types of assault to all students, faculty, and staff. In doing so, the university ensures an equitable space in which women and men are allowed to succeed in their education.
By enacting and enforcing these policies, Lynn University helps further target 5.1 of SDG 5, which focuses on ending discrimination on the basis of sex at all levels.
Programs for women
Research for women, by women
Since 2020, The Social Impact Lab at Lynn University has partnered with national non-profit Women Forward International and international non-profit The Sakena Fund on a long-term research project that helps continue the education of women in Afghanistan. AY22-23 was the third year of the program and saw students continue researching how to build a virtual university given the sociopolitical changes that recently affected women in the country.
Each year, two to three Lynn University students take on a new assignment, building on what has been done before to reach the project goals. Students have worked on identifying some of the most viable curriculum materials for women's education, as well as finding partners for an online university that would be accessible to women in Afghanistan. The research progress is presented annually in a virtual forum and published by Women Forward International. The goal of the project is to help organizations on the ground continue to provide education for women regardless of the sociopolitical challenges.
Women Leaders Affinity Group
Lynn University College of Business and Management professors Dr. Wendy Wallberg and Dr. Ellen Ramsey host the Women Leaders Affinity Group, which is an inclusive community open to all dedicated to championing women in leadership. The group’s mission is to empower and celebrate the accomplishments of women in leadership positions across all academic disciplines. Through captivating guest speaker sessions, it highlights the remarkable women who have shattered glass ceilings, provided invaluable insights, and inspired attendees on the path to success. An additional objective of the series is to foster a supportive environment for women in the business world so that, together, they can pave the way to a more equitable and diverse future in the realm of business and management.
Student groups for women are also part of the mentorship network at Lynn University, with student-led initiatives such as Her Campus creating women-led programs for all female students.
Scholarships for women
The Alliance for Women Executives (AWE), in partnership with Lynn University, provides scholarships to young women graduating from any Palm Beach County high school. Lynn University’s women’s lacrosse and women’s basketball teams also provide scholarship opportunities for female athletes.
STEM Conference for women
Starting in AY22-23, Lynn University developed an annual STEM conference for women. The university invites local middle school and high school girls who get to learn from professionals in the field and see presentations by college students on related topics. In AY22-23, the theme of the conference focused on Women in Environmental Science.
By engaging in research that furthers women’s education, proving mentorship for women in leadership, offering scholarships for women to pursue their education, and creating opportunities for women to learn about fields in which they are underrepresented, Lynn University helps further target 5.5 of SDG 5 by helping women develop the skills needed for them to obtain equal opportunities at all levels of leadership, from management to politics.
