Goal 9

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.

SDG9 focuses on issues relating to building reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure; increasing resource efficiency and environmentally sound technologies; upgrading industrial capabilities; supporting development, research, and innovation; and more. At Lynn University, this takes on a variety of forms, from the institution’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and its push for iPad-powered learning to its innovative approaches to education, digital art museums, and much more.

This report is organized into three sections:

  1. Institutional Initiatives: Refers to ongoing initiatives at the institution that are currently active, occur every year, and relate to SDG9. Wherever possible, statistics are provided to show the impact of this work.

  2. Events/News: Refers to single events or news that occurred during the reporting year of AY 23–24 relating to SDG9. These are not recurring and, as such, are not part of the long-term initiatives.

  3. Courses: Refers to all the courses in the university’s academic catalog for the reporting year AY 23–24 that deal with issues related to SDG9.

Institutional Initiatives

Sustainable architecture

Lynn University holds three LEED certifications for sustainable buildings, including one platinum certification for the Mohammed Indimi International Business Center, and two silver certifications for the Christine E. Lynn University Center and the Mary and Harold Perper Residence Halls. Further construction, including the latest Capstone Apartments, has also been built sustainably. These efforts include solar sunshades, LED lighting, recycled materials, responsibly sourced lumber, and more.

In creating more sustainable housing, Lynn University also provides more affordable housing for students compared to the market price of rent in the surrounding area.

Energy efficient cooling

Lynn University uses reclaimed water in the Central Energy Plant, thus reducing consumption of potable water and ensuring energy efficiency. This cooled water system is so energy efficient that in 2016 alone, the university saved 4.3 million kWh of electricity. This is the equivalent of burning 7,409 barrels of oil, 3.5 million pounds (about 1587572 kg) of coal, or 42.4 tankers of gasoline.

By providing more sustainable architecture and technology in key areas across campus, Lynn University helps further target 9.1 of SDG9, which focuses on developing quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.

iPad-powered learning

Lynn University is an Apple Distinguished School that has embraced iPad-powered learning initiative. Upon enrollment, all first-year students receive an iPad, which allows them to easily access their coursework and digital textbooks from anywhere. This guarantees more equitable access to technology for all students and reduces resources spending by providing access to faculty-authored digital textbooks and other materials, thereby reducing out-of-pocket expenses for Lynn students.

NFT Museum

Lynn University has become a leading institution in the NFT space through its collaborations to create an NFT Museum in Boca Raton, Florida. The museum is an innovative approach to art, technology, and mass production, which allows for many works of art to be presented through the same medium without having to use extra resources. Additionally, the digital format of the work allows for duplication without the need for other non-sustainable resources. The museum is a step toward innovative thinking at Lynn University’s College of Communication and Design, and it serves to rally artists and NFT enthusiasts throughout the year by hosting panels and guest visitors in the area.

Through hands-on competitions, international collaboration, and cutting-edge digital showcases, the museum directly supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Engaging students from Lynn University, high schools, nonprofits, and the global AI art community, the Lynn NFT Museum made a measurable impact in community outreach, inclusion, and experiential learning.

By engaging with new technologies that are more sustainable across a variety of infrastructures Lynn University helps further target 9.4 of SDG9, which focuses on upgrading infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them more sustainable and resource-efficient through the adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and processes.
